What to do in Cap Ferret?
In 1792 the first lighthouse in Cap Ferret was being contemplated, only to be built a little later and put into service in 1840. Originally it was a tower rising to a height of 47,7 meters and then raised to 51 meters. There is electricity in the lighthouse since 1929. It was blown up in august 1944 by the
Germans.
A new lighthouse was built relatively quickly in 1947 at the tip of the Cap Ferret and inaugurated on the 7th of August in 1949. They used the plans of the first lighthouse. The new tower is higher than the first, being 52 meters high and then raised to 62 meters. The main doorway to enter the building is
dominated by the pediment which shows years of commissioning and a bas-relief representing a boat
in the sea, a fish and a star representing the light of the lighthouse. The entrance hall there is the original mosaic of Auguste Labouret (1871-1827) which represents the Bassin d’Arcachon and the peninsula of Cap Ferret. There are 2 statues, one of the engineer Beautemps-Beaupré (1766-1854) and one of the physicist Fresnel (1788-1827), the creator of the lenses with the same name.
