The city of wine in Bordeaux is a museum around the world and culture of wine. Located in Bordeaux, on the Quais de Bacalan, it opened its doors on the 31st of May in 2016 after 3 years of renovation.
The history
The idea of an exposition about wine came to light in 2009. The main participants for this project were Bordeaux metropole and also Région Aquitaine, the Interprofessional council of Bordeaux wine, the Chamber of commerce, the department of La Gironde, the State, Europe, Feder and the city of Bordeaux. This project cost a total amount of 81 million euros of which 31 million euros were financed by the city of Bordeaux.
The building
It is an iconic building in Bordeaux and the architecture of the Cité du vin is quite exquisite and remarkably attractive. It is often compared to the museum Guggenheim in Bilbao.
Anouk Legendre and Nicolas Desmazières, architects from XTU, are the designers of this remarkable building on the edge of the river Garonne.
On the ground floor the ceiling height is 4 meters in a round shape, where you will find a wine cellar and the shop.
On the first floor there is a temporary exhibition, a reading room, workshops and an auditorium with 250 places.
The second floor offers a permanent exhibition, explaining the multiple cultures of wine.
On the seventh floor there is a restaurant with panoramic views named “The 7” and on the eighth floor the Belvedere where you have a 360° view of the city and the river.
The Cité du vin welcomes each year thousands of visitors from around the world and contributes in the beautiful Bordelais landscape.
