The region has been inhabited since the Neolithic.
- In the 4th century Bordeaux was called Burdigala and was an "emporium" of the Roman world.
- From the 5th century to the 12th Burdigala (aka Bordeaux) was plundered many times. Then this city was taken over by the Catholics
- 1453 Charles VII takes back Bordeaux from the English.
- 1715 Bordeaux is the seat of institutions (academy, parliament, etc.), it is also an important commercial center, in fact its port allows it to export its goods.
- 1822 After multiple rebellion of the people against the king of France, the population fails to hang the prefect representing the king. In parallel it is the opening of the Stone Bridge (Pont de Pierre) which is still standing today.

- 1875 to 1899 the city launched competitions in which statues of historical figures were created (that of the Place des Quinconces for example)
- 1914 Bordeaux is named capital of France because of the raging war.
- After the war, the economy in Bordeaux can be summed up in three points. Metallurgy, chemical industry, food industry.
- Adrien Marquet, mayor of the city in these years, decides to redo the sewers, the public lighting and the construction of multiple monuments throughout the city.
- 1930 the crisis is also present in Bordeaux but the municipality decides to continue the work.
- On August 28, 1944 Bordeaux is liberated after an agreement between the German authorities and the liberation forces. The next day the first issue of the newspaper Sud-Ouest was published.
- From 1945 to now Bordeaux is developing continuously thanks to, among others, Jacques Chaban Delmas.
